Saturday, October 25, 2025 Club Customization Hits the Home Stretch! ~Shaft Cutting and Bargain Grip Installation Edition~

 

The "radical customization" project for my golf clubs, which started yesterday, continues! Here is Part 2 of the saga!

It's time for the main event: cutting the shafts!

The key to this whole modification is the drastic short-shanking—making all the clubs the same length as the pitching wedge (PW)! It was a tense moment as I re-checked the markings I made yesterday...

First, I quickly cut the shafts of the 9-iron, 8-iron, and finally, the 7-iron. Done!

The base set for this customization is a 6-club set from the 5-iron to the PW. However, I’ve decided to short-shank the 4 clubs from the 7-iron to the PW first. I’ll give them a thorough test run, and depending on the results, I’ll decide whether to move on to the 6-iron and 5-iron. No need to rush into things (lol).

Incredible Value! Installing Bargain Grips

With the shafts shortened, the next step is installing the grips!

The grips I'm using this time are Tour Velvet Standard grips, which I snagged on Yahoo! Auctions! I got a set of 10 for the astonishingly low price of ¥1,680, including shipping! That works out to just ¥168 per grip! Unbelievable value! And yes, they were brand new.

For the double-sided tape used to secure the grips, I opted for the easy-to-use pre-cut vertical strips instead of the spiral method. Quick setup!

The specs for these grips are an M60 caliber and a weight of 52 grams.

When I tried to insert the grip onto the shaft... wait, is it tighter than usual?! It seems this M60 caliber is quite a snug fit. After wrestling with it, I finally managed to get the grip fully seated!

Holding the club after installation, the grip feels a little firm. Is this due to the low price, or is it a characteristic of this model? Well, I’ll find out when I finally hit some balls!

Now, all that's left is to wait for the grip adhesive to fully cure.
