Legazpi Golf Diary Monday, September 15, 2025

Good morning.

Speaking of consumables for golf clubs, there's the grip. This time, I bought a few golf grips from the Philippine online shop "Lazada Philippines."

I purchased the following three types:

  • Tour Velvet Mid-Size (60g) with the "Golf Pride" logo

  • Golf Pride CP2 Pro Mid-Size (63g)

  • Golf Pride Putter Reverse Taper Round Type

First, I replaced the putter grip. This was completed without any problems. Next, I tried to replace the Golf Pride jumbo grip on my Yamaha driver with the "Golf Pride CP2 Pro Mid-Size (63g)" I had purchased. Removing the old grip was no problem, but when I tried to install the new grip, the grip unexpectedly ripped.

I'm beginning to suspect that the Golf Pride grips sold on Lazada Philippines are counterfeits made in China, possibly with a different rubber compound than the genuine products. While the price was significantly cheaper than the genuine Japanese products, issues like this make it hard to judge a product on price alone.

I couldn't leave my driver grip as it was, so I quickly installed a Tour Velvet Midsize. This installed without any problems, but I'll have to wait and see how durable it is.

I installed the Jumbo Grip I removed this morning on a Kasco Dolphin wedge. I believe this is a genuine product purchased in Japan, so I expect it will install without any problems. Sure enough, it went on smoothly.

I wonder how good the Chinese counterfeits sold in the Philippines are? I'll continue using them carefully.
