Legazpi Golf Diary: Things I Want to Challenge in Japan

I'm enjoying my golf life in the Philippines, but there's one thing I'd like to try when I return to Japan: making my own one-length iron set.

The higher the iron club, the longer the shaft, making it more difficult to hit. Pitching wedges, in particular, are relatively easy to hit. So, I'm thinking of making a "one-length" or "two-length" iron set.

Specifically, I'll make my 5-iron, 6-iron, and 7-iron all the same length, and my 8-iron, 9-iron, and pitching wedge all the same length. Furthermore, by adjusting the weight with lead to achieve the same balance, I'll be able to set up with the same ball position for each club. This should also help me overcome any weaknesses I may have with each club.

One concern is the difference in distance between clubs. It's generally said that iron distance varies by 10 yards with each club, but as an amateur, I can't always make the same swing. That's why I want to try out how distance changes when using clubs that are the same length but have a different loft angle.

First, I'll purchase an inexpensive used set of irons and modify all three clubs, from the 8 iron to the pitching wedge, to be the same length, then measure the distance I can hit.

Please look forward to this experiment in Japan!
